Why support Highland Magic Wool?

  • Be a part of a rising fibre tide. More and more artists & crafters are seeking out wool and yarns that are high provenance, low impact and wonderful quality.

This past year, I have been working with Scottish smallholders to gather some beautiful sheep’s fleeces for a yarn I want to create.

I chose, picked through and sorted almost 100 fleeces last shearing season, taking the best parts of fleeces from Ryeland and Shetland sheep, as well as some gorgeous alpacas!

Early this spring, this fleece will be taken down to a small mill in the Scottish Borders to be washed and combed into fleece rovings for handspinning into yarn.

For the first time, I am aiming to fundraise to have a millspun yarn made! This is my own local fleece, spun in small batches into yarns that will cost a bit less for the buyer as its creation takes less time than handspun.

  • By upscaling my available yarns, I can start to sell in more shops and galleries than is possible with just spinning by hand!

Your support will be matched with either yarns at a 20% discount or a credit toward a bespoke garment or art piece.

I’m looking to raise £3000 toward mill processing fees this year, enabling me to send all of my wool harvest to be prepared.

I have a long term goal of opening my own mini spinning mill in Perthshire, but in the interim your support is what is keeping me going.

Thanks for reading and believing in me!

 FAQs

  • Expect to have your preorder packaged up and ready to go by 1 April, 2025. Orders may be posted earlier than this if they’re ready.

  • Your preorder will become part of my larger mill order for the year- you get to choose how much yarn and/or rovings you’d like, and whether these are undyed or will be naturally dyed. The discount off of my regular 2025 prices is 20% for customers and 30% for retail shops who are wholesaling.

  • I source my raw fleeces from smallholders/hobby farmers in the North of Scotland. I work with these suppliers year on year to keep improving upon wool quality year on year! My objective is to source materials that are high quality, high welfare for all animals involved, and high provenance. Keeping my supply chain transparent and sustainable is very important to me.

  • I work with natural dyes exclusively- some foraged, some using invasive plants, some extracts- but all low-impact and sustainable.
